Breakfast is still a highlight of the day the food just goes on and on! Today we arrive in Durnstein one of the smallest villages in Austria, you can have a leisurely walk into town or catch the mini train which will take you into town. While in town you can spend some time checking out the little shops which are jam packed full of locally made goodies, try some locally made wine or perhaps the local bakery (here we go again talking about food). Anyway it’s a great little town, walk through town and check out the view over the valley and the vines that go up the side of the hill. After all of this it’s time to get back to the ship so we can sail further down the Danube to Melk. When everyone is back on board believe it or not it’s lunch time!
After a peaceful time sailing down to Melk we arrived and docked at about 4.00 pm, our tour starts and we board our coach to be transferred for the guided tour through the Melk Abbey and the church. The Melk Abbey is a school run by the monks, it has about 750 students, the abbey has been run by the Benedictine Monks who have lived and worked there for the last 900 years. The building is huge and has many hundreds of rooms full of history and art collections and has the biggest library collection of old and historic books dating back hundreds of years. The main corridor is about 200 metres long, I would hate to think how many millions of dollars it would cost to build it today. There is so much here to see you could stay here for hours but we only get a snapshot of it as we are only here for about an hour and a half. The last thing we see is the amazing church which has to be seen to be believed I can’t describe it apart from saying wow, you need to see this. Put it on your bucket list! Of course to leave the place you have to exit through the gift shop surprise surprise! More purchasing!
It’s time to head back to the ship, you can go by coach or take a nice 15 minute walk back through the forest, after all that we have eaten the walk sounded like the best option and was for quite a lot of people. As soon as everyone is back on board it was sailing time and was time for drinks at the bar to listen to the Cruise Director Bart about the programme for the next couple of days.
Then it’s dinner time in the restaurant, same as usual food laid on complimentary beer, wine and soft drinks wow another 4 course meal prepared by amazing chefs and delivered by amazing restaurant staff unbelievable meal and service again.
After dinner tonight we have an entertainer coming onboard to play the violin for us. He was very good and played all sorts of music on his violin (fiddle) even Waltzing Matilda. He was a great entertainer and every time he said it was his last song everyone wanted more, he ended up playing a few more than intended and then had to pack his gear up quickly so he could be dropped off at the next lock along the way. Late night snacks were available and if you wanted to dance the night away our musician fired up the piano. Most people went off to bed but some partied on a bit longer!
