Regensburg

A bit of a sleep in this morning, before enjoying breakfast and then a relaxing morning cruising down the beautiful Danube. We met Bartel in the lounge area about the upcoming ship swap because of the high water, lucky for us Travelmarvel have a ship heading south as well as us heading north so all we have to do is jump on a coach and change ships. Stay tuned for more info about this.

We enjoyed some typical German Fruehschoppen in the lounge with sausages and pretzels. This custom means literally "an alcoholic drink before midday in company" usually on a Sunday, it’s just a get together another excuse for a beer and food.

Lunch is served in the dining room again today and it was beautiful. After lunch we have a walking tour of Regensburg, a stroll along the Danube till you get to the stone bridge which has been there for many 100s of years. Next to the stone bridge you will hear about the oldest bratwurst (sausage) kitchen in Germany, it’s been there since 1135 and you just go and get a couple of sausages in bread with a bit of tomato sauce and some sweet mustard, beautiful!

A walk through town will show you a variety of squares, small alleys and a number of famous towers. A highlight of the city is the cathedral, Regensburg was lucky during World War 2 they didn’t suffer the same damage from bombing as many other German cities.
Regensburg was once home of Oskar Schindler remembered recently in a movie called Schindlers List. Another favourite son is the previous pope Benedict XVI and the biggest employers in the area are BMW the car company and the university.
The main canal was completed in 1992 and this linked the Danube river and the Rhine river together, it was 171 kms long permitting river traffic to flow right through from the North Sea to the Black Sea a distance of 3540 kms. This links up 15 different countries and now allows millions of tonnes of freight to be delivered much easier each year.

After the tour it was back on the river boat just in time for coffee and cake, a port talk with Bartel about tomorrow’s program, and then a farewell drink with the captain and crew. Then to the dining room again for our final dinner on this ship the Diamond as tomorrow we were leaving to go to the ship called the Jewel.

After dinner it’s back to the lounge to meet our entertainer for tonight a true Aussie country singer who lives in Austria, however he did say he comes back every year for the Tamworth Country Music Festival. We might see him next year, we will have to keep our eye out. When the entertainment was over it was time for late night snacks or bed time you choice.
