We left Amarillo this morning after breakfast and we were not on the road very long when we had our first stop, Cadillac Ranch. We all walked out into a paddock to find ten old Cadillac car bodies about twenty five percent of each buried in the ground nose first standing in a row. We were given a spray can of paint and told to try our hand at graffiti so nearly everyone had a go and left their mark. We weren’t the first ones to do this as the paint on them was so thick, but I guess they have been painted like this since 1974 so that’s about 40 years.
Moving onto our second stop at Adrian right on the border of USA and New Mexico, this is also the half way point of Route 66. We stopped there for a coffee and cinnamon bun which is a specialty at this stop.
Our next stop was at Russell? Travel Centre, it’s like a huge department store where you can buy pretty much everything and then out the back there is a car museum. This was probably the best collection of cars and memorabilia that I’ve ever seen in one place, fantastic and yes they did have a gift shop!
We then moved onto our next stop at Tucumcari, New Mexico this is where the western series Rawhide was filmed years ago. I can remember watching that on television and that’s the first show I remember seeing Clint Eastwood in. We then viewed the retro neon signs and visited some more gift shops before moving on to Santa Rosa, New Mexico to view the Route 66 Auto Museum. Yes another museum and yes you guessed it, it had cars in it as well, it was also very good but it was a bit different to the one we saw earlier today but still good to see.
The scenery has certainly changed since the first couple of weeks. We didn’t see any ?onghorns?in Texas, however, we did see several cattle ranches and Wind Farms. This area is much drier, with a lot of cactus and quite flat country to start with before ?limbing?the hills in to Albuquerque. Upon arrival at our hotel we had some free time before dining at the Route 66 Diner, great burgers, milk shakes and ice cream - very Retro on our way back to the hotel we saw a fireworks display which was put on because the World Hot Air Balloon Fiesta is in town, but it was too windy for the balloons to fly.
