After breakfast today we left Oklahoma City for Amarillo, Texas. Along the way stopping in at many museums, firstly the Route 66 Museum at Clinton, which was really good with lots of history and memorabilia about Route 66, then the National Route 66 Museum at Elk City, where they had the biggest Route 66 sign I have seen to date.

The U Drop In at Shamrock was an old service stations and cafe on Route 66 followed by the Barbed Wire Museum at McLean, who would have thought there would be a museum on barbed wire. We are pretty much ?useumed out? however it? all part of the Route 66 experience. The museums are fantastic and the people there are so happy to see us, always receive a very friendly welcome and a thanks for calling, you have a good day now.

We also took in a few photo opportunities, Shamrock, Texas has the world? tallest water tower, and at Groom, Texas, they have the second largest Cross in the Western Hemisphere and can be seen from 20 miles away. Not too far away they have a Leaning Water Tower, which is a publicity stunt, proclaiming to be a Route 66 icon, it’s true what you hear everything is bigger in America. Whilst taking the photos of the Leaning Tower, we got to walk amongst a cotton crop which no one had seen before, so this was a real treat for the farmers on the trip.

After booking in at our hotel, we dined at the Big Texas Steak Ranch where steak is their specialty so most of us ordered steak and it was good. While we were there we witnessed a steak eating challenge going on. The rules are you have to eat a 72 ounce steak, the salad and the bread roll in one hour and then it’s free. If you don’t make it you have to pay seventy two dollars. We witnessed a guy who did it with 28 seconds to spare. I don’t know how he did it, it was massive, I didn’t think he had a hope. You have to sit at a table raised up so you are visible from all over the restaurant and have big stopwatches there as well as people all taking photos all the time. He should have got paid as well!

You never would have guessed it they had a gift shop, so once we got everyone out of there we headed back to the hotel for some rest and to get ready for our next day.
